Goodbye, Sad but Sweet
Another Salty slipped away this week, a gentleman who loved his family and raising orchids as much as he loved fishing. His wake was attended by friends and family. A teenage granddaughter, not yet fully accepting the concept of death, who dabbed at her watery eyes. A younger girl, perhaps her sister, who could not stop sobbing. At the head of the line of viewers stood his son and daughters, tall and resigned, with firm handshakes and welcoming smiles. And his widow, calm, gracious, efficient. To the left of the casket, a beautiful, sunny yellow orchid attested to one of the occupant's loves; to the right, a deep-sea fishing rod from which dangled an exciting red lure.
On another day, family and friends marched into church for the funeral mass, the mourners sedate; the young girls, now composed but wearing telltale, red-rimmed eyes, as though they hated death but were slowly coming to accept it. The service began, songs were sung; the son, choking back his sobs, read a poem he had written for his father. And soon it was over, and the mourners filed from the church to enjoy a repast and each other's company before making the long pilgrimage to the military cemetery where their hero would join his comrades.
