Billingsgate Shoals and Great Island Revealed!

More spectacular aerial photos by Pete Gray/Area 61. The Billingsgate Island shoals are several miles across and are only accessable by boat. Cape Cod Bay is at the top and Wellfleet Harbor on the right. This is a popular area for the Rock Harbor charter fleet and on a weekend you may see 30 boats of all sizes trolling or jigging within a mile of here. Billingsgate is submerged at high tide and the shoals may be only a few feet deep at low so be careful out there!

Billingsgate Island (low tide) from Southeast

Billingsgate Island at low tide. Note boat in lower left corner.

Note the fishing boat in the lower left above. The "ripples" are bars and eel grass beds ...good fish holding structure. The island is loaded with shellfish.

The spit on the right above is Jeremy Point at the southern tip of Great Island. The channel between Jeremy and Billingsgate is known as "The Slough" and marked by Buoy #8. Be careful going through here as there are large rocks on one side that are submerged at dead high tide!

Great Island, Wellfleet looking Southeast

The last shot (above) is from the Northwest looking at Great Island with "The Gut" on the left and Billingsgate just barely visible on the far right. Wellfleet Harbor is at the top with Eastham in the distance. The fishing is good all along here and the fleet may often be found in deeper water (20-40 feet) to the right of the shallower water shown above. Tube & Worm is popular in the shallower waters. A little further to the left of the area shown below is the popular trolling area known as "The Path".

Look for my little 18' Maritime Skiff "Oyster Cove" on these waters and give me a shout on channel 68.  Private mail me on the Forum if you want to join me on  a trip.     Dick 'fishhead' Nicholson
